Megaflatables involved in creating a Giant Inflatable Aunt Marge

At Megaflatables, we pride ourselves on creating some of the most imaginative and spectacular inflatables in the world. One of our recent and most exciting projects was the creation and event management of a giant Aunt Marge inflatable, which was flown over Tower Bridge in London. This event marked the 20th anniversary of the release of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and was a part of a promotional stunt for a new feature at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

A Colossal Creation

The giant inflatable Aunt Marge is a tribute to the comical scene in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where Harry accidentally inflates his Aunt Marge, causing her to float away. The inflatable was an impressive feat of engineering and design. Standing at 20ft high the Inflatable  Aunt Marge appeared to hover majestically in front of the iconic Tower Bridge.

The Process of creating  the inflatable Aunt Marge included the hand painted head and hair  as well as sewing and stitching the clothes to the inflatable. Each step of the process was meticulously planned and executed to ensure that the final product was as close to the original film depiction as possible.

A Celebration of Practical Effects

Laura Sinclair-Lazell, head of show experience at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, highlighted an interesting fact about the original film production. Contrary to popular belief, the iconic floating scene of Aunt Marge was not created using CGI but was achieved through the incredible work of skilled filmmakers. The cast, camera and lighting departments, stunt players, make-up artists, and special effects teams collaborated tirelessly to bring this magical moment to life. The costume department also played a significant role, creating 38 different tweed suits of varying sizes and shapes, with four separate make-up stages to depict Aunt Marge’s inflation.

Launching Aunt Marge into the Ether

The unveiling of the inflatable Aunt Marge was not just a nostalgic nod to the film but also marked the introduction of the new Return to Azkaban feature at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. This new feature allows fans to delve deeper into the making of the third Harry Potter film and appreciate the practical effects that made the magic come alive on screen.

The giant inflatable Aunt Marge floating over Tower Bridge was a sight to behold and a testament to the creativity and dedication of our team at Megaflatables. It was a fitting tribute to a beloved scene from the Harry Potter series and a celebration of the craftsmanship involved in bringing such magical moments to life. We are proud to have been a part of this project and look forward to creating more spectacular inflatables that capture the imagination and bring joy to fans around the world.
