Creating Giant Inflatable Neurons for Gemma Wood at the Jyvaskyla Light Show

At Megaflatables, we specialise in turning bold creative visions into larger-than-life realities, quite literally. One of our most exciting recent projects saw us collaborating with the incredibly talented artist Gemma Wood to create a stunning centrepiece for the Jyvaskyla Light Show in Norway. Her concept? Giant, glowing inflatable neurons that would visually represent the electric, dynamic workings of the human brain. What followed was an extraordinary journey of creativity, design, and innovation, ultimately resulting in a breathtaking display of giant inflatable art that illuminated the night and captivated audiences.

The Artistic Vision Behind the Inflatable Neurons

Gemma Wood approached us with a truly unique idea: to create glowing inflatables that resembled neurons firing inside the brain. Her artistic vision was to capture the invisible but essential magic of thought; the intricate web of neural connections that make up the human mind. She wanted viewers to be immersed in a visual representation of how thoughts form and fire in real-time, with light playing a central role in mimicking the electrical impulses of the brain.

We were immediately intrigued by the concept. Translating such an abstract, complex idea into a physical form is no small feat, but it’s exactly the kind of challenge we love at Megaflatables. Our job was to take Gemma’s sketches and concepts and transform them into massive, light-up inflatable sculptures that would inspire awe and spark curiosity at the event.

From Sketch to Sculpture: The Megaflatables Design Process

Turning Gemma’s concept into reality began with a series of collaborative design sessions. Our expert team worked closely with her to ensure that the form, structure, and lighting of the inflatable neurons perfectly captured her artistic intent. Every detail mattered, from the branching dendrites and synaptic terminals to the pulsing glow that would simulate brain activity.

Our design team used advanced 3D modelling software to bring the concept to life in a digital environment first. This allowed us to experiment with scale, structure, and placement of lighting elements before a single stitch was sewn. The neurons needed to be impressive in size but also lightweight and easy to install.

Once the design was finalised, our skilled production team got to work constructing the inflatable sculptures using high-quality materials known for their durability, flexibility, and visual impact. Integrating the lighting systems was a crucial part of the process. We developed a bespoke internal lighting setup that allowed each neuron to glow and pulse with life, mimicking the natural energy of a firing synapse.

Creating a Visual Experience: Lighting That Mimics Brain Activity

The lighting was not just decorative, it was central to the concept. The goal was to represent the way neurons spark, connect, and communicate. To achieve this, we engineered a dynamic lighting system that allowed each inflatable neuron to flicker and pulse in real-time. The end result was nothing short of mesmerising: a glowing constellation of inflatable sculptures that seemed to breathe and think, much like the human brain itself.

Whether viewed from afar or explored up close, the installation offered an unforgettable sensory experience. The lights pulsed gently in synchrony, highlighting the connections between the neurons and drawing the audience into the artwork. The response from the Jyvaskyla Light Show audience was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the installation’s blend of artistic depth and immersive design.

Managing the Magic: Full-Service Installation and Event Support

At Megaflatables, we understand that creating an inflatable masterpiece is only part of the journey. That’s why we also took care of all event logistics for this project, covering everything from delivery and setup to technical support and takedown.

Our experienced installation team handled everything on-site in Norway, working within tight timeframes and event schedules. We ensured the glowing inflatables were safely secured, correctly lit, and perfectly aligned with Gemma Wood’s vision. By managing all the behind-the-scenes work, we allowed Gemma to focus on her art and enjoy the moment with peace of mind knowing that the technical execution was in expert hands.

This seamless collaboration between artist and inflatable specialist is something we pride ourselves on. Whether we’re creating bespoke giant inflatable art for festivals, commercial events, or public installations, we bring the same level of care, creativity, and professionalism to every project.

A Fusion of Art and Innovation

The success of this project lies in the fusion of artistic expression and technical innovation. Gemma Wood’s inflatable neurons installation was more than just a spectacle, it was a living curation that invited audiences to reflect on the complexity and beauty of the human mind.

The project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when visionary artists and passionate creators come together. At Megaflatables, we don’t just build inflatables, we bring stories, science, and imagination to life in extraordinary ways.
