Megaflatables had the pleasure of collaborating with The Bakehouse Factory on MCR Made Icons, a free exhibition at Manchester Arndale celebrating iconic Mancunians. Using Stan Chow’s distinctive artwork, we transformed his instantly recognisable 2D illustrations into a collection of large-scale 3D inflatable heads suspended throughout the Arndale for visitors to discover.
The challenge was to take Stan Chow’s signature 2D portraits and faithfully translate them into three-dimensional inflatable sculptures. Every inflatable needed to retain the distinctive features, colours and character of the original illustrations while introducing the depth, shape and proportions needed to work from every angle.
Megaflatables translated Stan Chow’s 2D illustrations into bespoke three-dimensional inflatable sculptures for the MCR Made Icons exhibition.
Working from Stan Chow’s original artwork, our design team developed each portrait into a fully rounded 3D inflatable while retaining the distinctive features and character of the illustration.
Each bespoke inflatable head was manufactured to preserve the colours, proportions and recognisable details of the original artwork from every angle.
The completed inflatables were fully tested and treated by the Megaflatables team before leaving Mega HQ.
The finished inflatable heads were prepared for their journey to Manchester Arndale, ready to form part of the MCR Made Icons exhibition.
The finished MCR Made Icons installation brought Stan Chow’s illustrations off the page and into the physical world on a giant scale. Suspended throughout Manchester Arndale, the inflatable heads created an eye-catching free exhibition celebrating iconic Mancunians and Manchester culture, giving visitors a completely new way to experience the artwork and demonstrating the impact of giant inflatables in public installations.
