Project Overview
Megaflatables teamed up with artist Bruce Asbestos to produce a surreal giant inflatable cake installation at Wentworth Woodhouse. The piece blended fine art and inflatable craft to create a playful, larger-than-life talking point for visitors.
Contemporary artist Bruce Asbestos needed a partner to translate his surrealist “cake” concept from an original sketch into a large-scale, site-specific inflatable artwork for display inside the historic interiors of Wentworth Woodhouse. The brief called for a piece that captured his bold colours and playful, cartoonish style with accurate colour reproduction, while being structurally stable, safe and durable enough to be shown within a grade-listed heritage setting and create a striking contrast between modern inflatable art and the estate’s classical surroundings.
Megaflatables provided a complete, turnkey service across every stage of the project.
We translated Bruce Asbestos’s surrealist cake concept from sketch to 3D inflatable form, ensuring his bold colours and playful character stayed true at monumental scale.
Using high-quality materials and advanced fabrication techniques, we produced a monumental inflatable cake sculpture with crisp 3D detail and accurate colour reproduction.
Our team managed the full project lifecycle, coordinating design, fabrication and installation at Wentworth Woodhouse to ensure everything ran smoothly.
We delivered and installed the giant cake sculpture on-site, creating a safe and impactful display within the historic interiors of Wentworth Woodhouse.
The installation transformed Wentworth Woodhouse into a bold, immersive space. The giant inflatable cake brought energy and surrealist character into the historic interiors, but more importantly, it had that instant “wow” factor. Inflatables just work for this, they’re big, unexpected, and hard to ignore. People notice them straight away, and more importantly, they remember them. They also photograph really well. The scale, colour, and soft forms make them perfect for social content, so people naturally stop, take photos, and share them without being asked. It turns the space into something more than just a display, it becomes part of the experience. As a result:
The installation picked up strong organic traction on social media
Visitors were keen to share photos and videos
The historic setting became an easy, natural backdrop for content
The reach of the installation went far beyond the historic setting itself
